How to Identify What's Hatching

Look at the Water Surface

This is the obvious one, but most anglers don't look carefully enough. Get low — kneel on the bank or crouch — and look across the surface with the light behind you. Check Your Waders and Clothing

Flip Rocks

Wade into a riffle, pick up a few rocks, and look at the undersides. The nymphs clinging to those rocks are the insects that will hatch next. What to Do When Nothing Is Hatching

Nymph the Water

When nothing is hatching, trout are still eating — they're just eating underwater.
