You already know how to cast a fly rod. You can put a fly where you want it, more or less, and that feels like the hard part is behind you. It isn't. Casting is only half the equation in fly fishing — and honestly, it's the easier half. What happens after the fly lands on the water determines whether fish eat or ignore you, and that's where most anglers hit a wall they don't even realize is there.

The problem is drag. Every river has multiple current speeds flowing side by side — fast lanes next to slow lanes next to eddies next to seams. The moment your fly line lands across those different speeds, the faster water grabs the line and starts pulling your fly in ways that no natural insect would ever move. A mayfly dun doesn't accelerate sideways across a feeding lane. A real insect drifts passively, carried by the current it's sitting in. Your fly needs to do the same thing.

What Is Drag and Why Does It Kill Your Drift?

Drag is the unnatural movement of your fly caused by the current pulling on your fly line. It happens when different sections of your line sit in currents moving at different speeds, and the faster water drags the slower sections — and your fly — along with it.

Here's a common scenario. You're standing on the near bank. The water at your feet is slow. Ten feet out, there's a fast current tongue. Beyond that, a seam where a trout is rising in moderate flow. You cast across all three currents. The fly lands perfectly in the seam. For about two seconds, everything looks great. Then the fast midstream current grabs your belly of fly line, pulls it downstream, and your fly starts skating across the surface like a tiny water skier. The trout that was about to eat your fly watches it accelerate unnaturally and sinks back to the bottom. Drift over.

Why a Drag-Free Drift Is Non-Negotiable

Understanding how water moves through a river is the first step. The second step is understanding how fish perceive your fly.

Trout sit in current all day, every day, watching food drift past. They've seen thousands of insects float through their feeding lane, and every single one of those real insects moved at the speed of the water carrying it. No acceleration. No lateral movement. Just a passive, predictable drift. That's the baseline a trout measures your fly against.

When your fly drifts differently from everything else on the water — even slightly — the trout's instinct flags it as wrong. They don't think about it. They don't analyze it. They simply refuse. It looks wrong, so they ignore it. The Upstream Mend: Your Most Important Post-Cast Move

The upstream mend is the single most common and most useful line-control technique in fly fishing. It's what you'll use 80% of the time when fishing across current, and once it becomes automatic, your catch rate will climb noticeably.

The concept is simple: after your line lands on the water, you flip a loop of it upstream to counteract the faster current that's about to create drag. Here's how to do it, step by step.

Complete Your Cast and Let the Line Settle

Make your cast and let the fly, leader, and line land on the water. Lower your rod tip toward the surface. You want the rod tip low so you have room to make the mending motion without pulling the fly out of its drift lane.

Lift the Line Off the Water

Raise your rod tip smoothly to lift the belly of the fly line off the water's surface. You don't need to lift all the line — just the section between your rod tip and where your leader begins. The fly and leader should stay undisturbed on the water.

Roll the Line Upstream

With a smooth, rolling motion of your rod tip, flip the airborne line upstream — toward the direction the current is coming from. Think of it as drawing a half-circle in the air with your rod tip, starting from the downstream side and rolling over to the upstream side. The line should land on the water in a gentle upstream curve.

Lower Your Rod and Let It Drift

Drop your rod tip back down toward the water and let the fly continue its drift. The upstream belly you just created gives the current slack to straighten before it can pull your fly. You've just bought yourself several more seconds — sometimes much more — of drag-free drift.

If the drift is long enough, you may need to mend again as the current straightens the line a second time. That's normal. Mend as many times as needed to maintain the drift.

The most common mistake is mending too aggressively. If you yank the line upstream, you'll pull the fly out of the feeding lane or create a splash that spooks fish. The mend should be just forceful enough to reposition the line. Gentle. Deliberate. The fly shouldn't move. Positioning yourself well in the river helps — safe wading technique gives you the stability to mend from the right angle without losing your footing.

The Downstream Mend: When the Current Reverses the Problem

The upstream mend solves the most common drag scenario, but not the only one. Sometimes you need a downstream mend.

A downstream mend is appropriate when the current between you and your fly is slower than the current where your fly is drifting. This happens less often, but it's common when you're casting from a slow eddy across a seam into faster water, or when fishing from an inside bend toward the faster outside current.

The technique is identical to the upstream mend — lift, flip, lower — but in the opposite direction. You're putting slack downstream of the fly so the faster current at the fly can carry it naturally without the slower near-bank water acting as an anchor.

Downstream mends are also essential for swinging wet flies and soft hackles. When you're fishing a traditional across-and-down presentation and want your fly to swing through the current at a specific speed, downstream mends accelerate the swing. Upstream mends slow it. Stack Mending: Multiple Mends for Complex Current

Real rivers don't have one or two current speeds. They have dozens, all woven together in patterns that change every few feet. When you need a long drift through complex water — multiple current tongues, eddies, and seams between you and your fly — a single mend isn't enough. You need to stack mends.

Stack mending means making repeated upstream mends throughout the drift, each one repositioning the line before the current can create drag. The rhythm goes like this: cast, mend, drift, mend again, drift, mend again, until the fly has traveled through the entire zone you're fishing.

The keys to effective stack mending:

  • Mend early. Don't wait until you see drag — mend preemptively, as soon as the line starts to belly. By the time drag is visible, the fish have already seen it.
  • Mend gently. Each mend should reposition the line without disturbing the fly. Small, frequent mends beat one violent correction.
  • Keep the rod tip low between mends. This gives you maximum range of motion for the next mend and keeps you in contact with the fly.
  • Watch the line, not just the fly. Your eyes should track the entire line from rod tip to fly. The line tells you where drag is starting before the fly shows it.

Stack mending is physically easy but mentally demanding. It requires constant attention and the discipline to keep correcting throughout a long drift instead of just casting again. The Reach Cast: Building the Mend into Your Delivery

The reach cast is what happens when you get tired of mending after every cast and decide to build the mend into the cast itself. It's one of the most practical advanced techniques in fly fishing, and once you learn it, you'll use it constantly.

Here's the concept: during the forward cast, as the line is unrolling in the air toward your target, you extend your rod arm upstream — reaching it to the side — so the line lands on the water already positioned with an upstream belly. The fly lands in the target lane, the leader lays out straight, and the line is already mended before it touches the water.

How to Execute the Reach Cast

  1. Make a normal forward cast aimed at your target. The cast itself doesn't change — same timing, same stop.
  2. As the line unrolls in the air, reach your rod arm to the upstream side. Extend your arm fully, moving the rod tip upstream while the line is still airborne.
  3. The line follows your rod tip and lands on the water in a gentle upstream curve — the same shape you'd create with a post-cast mend, but without disturbing the water at all.
  4. Follow the drift by slowly tracking your rod tip downstream as the fly drifts. This extends the drag-free window even further.

The reach cast gives you a longer initial drag-free drift than a cast-then-mend approach because the line lands already in position — no splash from the mend, no risk of moving the fly. For cross-current presentations to rising trout, it's the single best tool in your arsenal.

Line Management on the Water: Stripping, Coiling, and Controlling Slack

Everything above deals with the line on the water. But there's another critical piece of line management: controlling the slack line between your reel and the stripping guide — the line in your hand and at your feet.

Poor line management costs fish in two ways. First, excess slack between your hand and the rod means you can't set the hook fast enough when a fish eats. By the time you take up all that slack, the fish has already spit the fly. Second, tangled line at your feet means you can't feed slack when you need to extend a drift, and you can't let a fish run when it needs to.

Stripping Line

After casting, use your line hand to strip in slack as the fly drifts toward you. Keep the line pinched against the rod grip with your index finger so you can set the hook instantly by lifting the rod. Strip with your line hand by pulling the line down in smooth, consistent lengths — not short jerky pulls that transmit movement to the fly.

Managing Coils

When you strip line in, it has to go somewhere. In calm water, let it fall at your feet or float on the surface beside you. In faster current, hold it in loose coils in your line hand — three or four loops draped over your fingers is usually enough. Never let stripped line pile up in fast current behind you. It will tangle, knot, and then break off the next fish that runs.

Staying in Contact

The goal is to always have just enough slack to allow a natural drift, but not so much that you can't set the hook. This is the constant tension of fly fishing — literally. Too tight and you drag the fly. Too loose and you miss the take. The sweet spot is a slight bow in the line between your rod tip and the fly, with your finger on the line ready to strip-set.

Feeding Line: Extending Your Drift Without Recasting

Sometimes the best thing you can do is let the drift run longer. A trout might be feeding 10 feet farther downstream than your cast reached, or the drag-free zone extends well past where the fly would normally start skating. Feeding line lets you extend the drift without picking up and recasting — which means less disturbance, fewer false casts over spooky fish, and more time with your fly in the feeding zone.

The technique is straightforward: as the current pulls on your fly line, release coils of slack through the guides, feeding them into the drift. The key is releasing smoothly and steadily so the added slack integrates into the drift naturally rather than landing in a heap that creates instant drag.

There are two common methods:

  • The shake feed: Wiggle your rod tip gently side to side while releasing line from your hand. The waggling motion feeds slack through the guides in small pulses. This works well for moderate feeds of a few extra feet.
  • The gravity feed: Hold your rod tip high and simply release line. Gravity and the current pull the slack through the guides. This is simpler but gives you less control.

Feeding line is particularly useful when fishing a long, uniform current seam where fish are rising at various points downstream. Instead of casting to each riser individually, you can cast to the nearest one and then feed line to extend the drift past the second and third fish in the line.

High Sticking in Pocket Water: Short Drifts, Maximum Control

Everything above assumes you're making casts of reasonable length across varied current. But some of the best fishing situations require the opposite approach: short drifts at close range in broken, turbulent water. That's where high sticking comes in.

Pocket water — the small pools and cushions behind rocks in fast, broken current — holds an enormous number of fish, especially trout. These pockets are often only a few feet across, and the currents surrounding them are chaotic. A standard cast with line on the water creates instant drag because every current between you and the pocket is pulling the line in a different direction.

The high-sticking solution: keep as much line off the water as possible. Wade close to the pocket (carefully — you're closer to the fish here), make a short cast or simply flip the fly into the pocket, and hold your rod tip high so the line hangs straight down from the tip to the water. The only thing touching the surface is your leader, tippet, and fly. No line on the water means no drag from conflicting currents.

Follow the drift by tracking your rod tip downstream at the speed of the current. When the drift ends — usually after only two or three seconds in a small pocket — lift up and drop the fly in again. It's fast, repetitive fishing, and it catches fish that most people walk right past because they think the water is too broken to fish effectively.
